The route starts at the picnic area near the II Cantoniera and winds through the picturesque Valle dei Vitelli, following an easy trail that alternates between short climbs and gentler stretches. After...
From here, the trail descends to the military village of “Le Buse,” one of the most important defensive complexes of World War I in the Stelvio sector. The site includes seventeen buildings for troops, artillery positions, bombards, and a dense network of trenches. Thanks to restoration efforts by the Stelvio National Park, part of the complex has been restored and one of the buildings has been entirely rebuilt.
The hike crosses the park’s limestone sector, characterized by a rich alpine flora. During the flowering season, you can observe numerous botanical species, including the Rhaetian poppy, the alpine butterwort, and alpine chamomile. The wildlife is equally diverse: marmots, chamois, and ibex are easily spotted, and with a little luck, you might even catch a glimpse of a bearded vulture.
From the rest area near the II Cantoniera, return to the last hairpin curve on State Road 38 and take the trail that leads into the Valle dei Vitelli. After crossing the bridge over the stream, continue along the left side of the valley until you reach the hill with the military structures, then descend to the military village of “Le Buse.” Return via the same route.
Da
Hiking boots, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen, water, and snacks.
The trail runs through alpine terrain: always check the weather forecast before setting out and stay on the marked trails. In rainy conditions, some sections may be slippery.
From Bormio, follow State Road 38 (SS38) toward the Stelvio Pass for about 15 km until you reach the rest area located at the II Cantoniera (formerly Casino dei Rotteri).
During the summer season, II Cantoniera can be reached by the buses that connect Bormio to the Stelvio Pass. We recommend checking schedules and operating periods before departure: www.bormio.eu/it/cosa-fare/outdoor/tr...
Free parking is available at the II Cantoniera rest area, the starting point of the hike. During peak season, it’s best to arrive early in the morning to have a better chance of finding a spot.
