This trail crosses some very beautiful areas, in some places panoramic open meadows and others running through thich beech forests. The trail follows good pathways with the exception of the Rocca della Scaletta crest. Here, it’s necessary to climb over rather high rocky crags. This particular stretch may be avoided however, by taking an alternative route travelling westwards to Rocca della Scaletta. The trail can become quite difficult and even dangerous during the coldest months due to ice and snow.
Mountain equipment is recommended.
The route can become very difficult and dangerous in the colder months, in the presence of snow and ice.
It is not recommended to undertake the route in winter on the most difficult stages, especially in the presence of snow, ice or fog.
It is recommended to stock up on water and food before departure.
Just south of Spingarga Pass lies the plateau known as Prato Mollo, where Rifugio Monte Aiona is located. The term "mollo" means a marshy terrain, soft due to the outcropping of groundwater. On the western edge of the Mollo Meadow rises the Pietra Borghese, a cliff made up of blocks of blackish, very hard, rough rock that deflects the compass needle. According to popular imagination it would be a meteorite, which fell there in ancient times. In reality it is an outcrop of lherzolite, a strongly magnetic rock belonging to the ophiolite group like the rocks that form the nearby Aiona and Penna mountains. From Incisa Pass, deviating from the Alta Via to the east, you can climb in about 45 minutes to the top of Mount Penna (1735 m), one of the most beautiful, best-known and most popular mountains in the Ligurian Apennines. Its north face, a hundred meters high, suddenly emerges from a vast beech and conifer forest (Monte Penna state forest), where a tiny pond of glacial origin is hidden. On the very panoramic summit of Mount Penna are a large statue of the Madonna and a small chapel-shelter.
