Founded in the 7th century, the three abbeys of Étival, Moyenmoutier and Senones, together with Bonmoutier to the north and Saint-Dié to the south, formed what is known as the Monastic Holy Cross of the Vosges. Since time immemorial, they have been places of learning and knowledge, attracting remarkable figures such as Cadinal Humbert, Father Hugo, Dom Calmet and Voltaire... Despite the wounds of the past century, they remain architectural ensembles of rare quality, at the heart of the towns. Their close proximity and differences make them unique in Lorraine.
Your journey starts at the Etival-Clairefontaine Abbey. Follow the rue de l'abbaye towards Moyenmoutier. Then take the greenway along the Rabodeau to Senones, passing Moyenmoutier Abbey. A few pedal strokes through the streets of Senones and you're on your way up to Denipaire, where you'll be rewarded for your efforts with some great views. Now it's time to head back downhill with your hair blowing in the wind. A few more kilometers and you're back at the starting point.
