The Mystical Trail to Mathisleweiher is one of the most beautiful circular walks around Hinterzarten. Following paths through woods and meadows that are close to nature, the walk takes you through the varied landscape of the Black Forest Highlands, combining peaceful encounters with nature with magnificent views and special spots along the way.
Passing the Kesslerhof and following the Emil-Thoma-Weg, the route takes you through woods and open countryside towards Mathisleweiher. This idyllically situated pond is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Black Forest Highlands. Nestled in the heart of nature and surrounded by partially sheltered shores, it invites you to take a break and enjoy the tranquillity of the Black Forest Highlands.
The trail then leads past the Mathislehof, where you can experience Black Forest farming at first hand. Anyone who appreciates regional produce should pay a visit to the farm shop. Somewhat hidden away, the Dorneckfelsen rock formation rewards walkers with a magnificent view of Titisee, the Hochfirst and the region’s wooded hills.
The tour combines relaxing forest sections, open pastureland and charming vantage points to create an all-round enjoyable hiking experience.
The walk starts behind the Kurhaus in Hinterzarten. The path takes you through the Herchenwäldele towards the Vinzenz-Zahn-Kreuz to the Wolfsgrund children’s playground and from there towards the former Jugendschanze on the Kesslerhang.
You’ll reach the Kesslerhof, where the milk really does come from happy cows. On your right, at the edge of the forest, you’ll head slightly uphill along the Emil-Thoma-Weg. A small fish pond invites you to linger for a while.
Follow the path and turn left in the Stuckwald, heading down to the mysterious Mathisleweiher, parts of whose banks are a nature reserve, and enjoy the idyllic setting. Stroll along the left-hand side of the lake and head towards Oberzarten/Dreiwege. Passing the beautifully situated Mathislehof with its own farm shop, you turn right towards Dorneck/Helmlewald.
Somewhat hidden away is the Dorneckfelsen, offering a magnificent view of Titisee and the Hochfirst. The route now heads back down to Erlenbruck. From here, you can take the Bruderstieg or, alternatively, follow the Dischler Path back towards Kesslerhang, always following the Zartenbach stream back to the centre of Hinterzarten.
