Just a few kilometres beyond Blaubeuren, where the Ancient Danube once flowed, today lie the most important prehistoric caves. The Geißenklösterle cave near Weiler can be described as the prehistoric cradle of the music industry, as three flutes cut from swan bones and mammoth ivory were unearthed here after more than 30,000 years. In the "Hohle Fels" near Schelklingen, archaeologists discovered the "Venus of Hohle Fels," a roughly 40,000-year-old female figure carved from mammoth ivory. Beer enthusiasts will find a stop worthwhile in the beer culture town of Ehingen. Along the Danube we reach Munderkingen, known for its timber-framed houses and numerous fountains. A visit to the monastery complex with the oldest baroque church in Upper Swabia is worthwhile in Obermarchtal. Soon after, we reach our destination in Riedlingen, the medieval Danube town with many timber-framed houses and the unmistakable warmth of the Swabian Jura.
Leaving the Blautopf town of Blaubeuren towards Schelklingen, our cycle path takes us through the picturesque Achtal valley, leading us along a very beautiful section to the "Hohle Fels," which has recently gained fame through the spectacular discovery of the "Venus of Hohle Fels." This prehistoric site is one of the largest cave halls in the Swabian Jura. We continue through Schmiechen to Allmendingen. Right through the GeoPark Swabian Jura it goes past caves, grottoes, and the impressive rock roofs of the "Lutheran Mountains."
From the beer culture town of Ehingen on the Danube, we cycle further to Munderkingen. Both towns impress with beautiful old towns, impressive timber-framed buildings, and interesting sights. Our idyllic cycle path runs mostly along the picturesque Danube to Untermarchtal, known for its monastery, the educational centre of the Vincentian nuns, and Untermarchtal Castle.
Leaving the town, we encounter interesting rock formations and soon reach a nice resting place directly on the Danube. After the Obermarchtal turnoff, a steep climb of roughly 15% must be mastered. At the top of the ridge lies the town of Rechtenstein. From the bergfried of the former Rechtenstein castle, the view over the Danube valley is breathtaking. It then goes back down into the valley, and behind Datthausen awaits a very steep descent. Over Zwiefaltendorf and Bechingen, we finally reach our destination in Riedlingen. This traditional little town lies between the Bussen (767 m) and the Swabian Jura.
