Ulrikaweg stage 5 - Illmensee - Salem
This stage leads through meadows and forests to little-known pilgrimage sites in the hinterland of Lake Constance. The landscape repeatedly offers wide views of Lake Constance and, in clear air, of the Alpine panorama.
The 5th stage of the Ulrikaweg leads from Illmensee via Heiligenberg to Salem Castle. The path initially follows parallel to the main road, then turns south. Mainly through meadows and forests, the path leads into Krumbach past a small chapel to Betenbrunn. This small, quiet village is worth a short rest: it houses a Marian pilgrimage church that invites visitors to look, linger, and pray. In front of the church, under a large lime tree, there are benches for a snack break.
The further hiking trail also leads through forests and meadows over the beautiful rest area Amalienhöhe with a wonderful view towards Heiligenberg. Here the first view of Lake Constance appears.
Those who want to stay longer in Heiligenberg can visit the castle or stop at one of the numerous inns.
The stage continues initially on often narrow paths along the Bodenseekreis Jubilee Trail, but then leaves it to reach Frickingen via the Frickinger Tobel. This section of the trail offers repeated beautiful views into the vast valley and back to Heiligenberg Castle. The cool ravine is especially pleasant to walk through on warm summer days.
In Frickingen, both the vineyard chapel, which is somewhat off the main route, and the village church invite a short pause before the last stretch of the day leads to Salem – always with the castle in sight.
