The day begins with a detour on the Verzasca side of Pizzo Costisc and di Scimarmota, then the track runs through the sunny slope of Poncione Piancascia with its steep meadows, curious goats, and shy chamois.
Later we turn right to the forest edge, cross several gullies, pass by Alpe Cuasca – with the only well along the route – and aim for the Passo dei Due Laghi. The crossing connects the twin valleys Valle di Coglio and di Giumaglio, while the two lakes, one on each side of the saddle, invite for a break, perhaps even a foot bath or a few swimming strokes. Finally, we arrive at Alpe Spluga. How lovely to reach the hut already in the early afternoon and lie on the meadow there, to indulge in idleness, enjoy the silence, and give unnecessary worries to the passing clouds.

The Via Alta Vallemaggia partly follows mountain hiking trails (T3), partly alpine paths (T4-T5–). In some sections, short parts with risk of falling and easy climbing passages must be overcome. The most difficult spots are often secured with chains and clamps.
Some huts open as early as June when the connecting stages are often still snow-covered. The best season usually lasts from July to September/October. But even in high summer, it is advisable to contact the hut wardens and inquire about the current conditions. Reservation in the huts is mandatory to avoid unpleasant surprises and secure a sleeping place.
The necessary prerequisites are:
Good experience in the alpine environment Adequate fitness Detailed planning (current conditions, weather, etc.) Sure-footedness on pathless terrain and freedom from vertigoNot to be underestimated:
Altitude Sudden weather changes Snowfields (especially early in the season) Stage length (especially for larger groups) Frequently patchy mobile network coverage On some stages no drinking water sourcesEmergency number in Switzerland (REGA): 1414
International emergency number: 112
Calling 112 connects you directly to the responsible rescue unit (paramedics, police, fire brigade). The GSM emergency number 112 can also be dialed if the SIM card or device is locked. The emergency number 112 is valid in almost all countries with GSM networks. Outside Switzerland, it works even without a SIM card.
In an emergency:
Keep a cool head Protect injured and affected persons from further dangers, weather, and cold Provide first aid Alert rescue forces and initiate recovery. Do not leave injured persons alone Do not forget your own safetyT4
