Start paddling north from the center of Vuolenkoski towards Konnivesi. The rock paintings of Haukkavuori and Rautakannanvuori are located in a magnificent bay in the northern part of Haukkaselkä. From afar, a stony figure resembling an animal head begins to appear on the rock of Haukkavuori, just like a bear's side profile.
When paddling closer, it is time to start spotting a rock painting depicting a running moose. The painting is very well preserved because it has been protected from rain under a small rock overhang. The painting is suspected to have been made before the breaking of the Heinola ridge, i.e. the formation of the Kymijoki River, meaning it could be even 7,000 years old and thus one of the oldest in Finland. The paintings located higher up on Rautakannanvuori are estimated to be the same age. On the steep cliff of Rautakannanvuori, about a kilometer northeast from the Haukkakallio painting, several faint color spots have been detected over a wide area, but in two places, figures of a moose, a boat, and a person viewed from the side can be distinguished. The northern bay of Haukkaselkä is an impressively majestic area, and besides the rock paintings, you can also see hawk or raven nests on the cliff walls.
By circling Kelloniemi, you can still visit one rock painting site. In Karhusaaressa at Kylkiäisniemi. Unlike the previous two painting sites, the Karhusaaressa rock painting requires landing on shore to find the cliff behind the trees on a shore ledge. The rock painting depicting animal figures on Karhusaaressa is thought to be younger than those of Haukkavuori and some of Rautakannanvuori's paintings, and it is located about chest height on the shore ledge when standing on land.
Searching for the rock paintings on the cliffs is like a small discovery trip after which it is worth continuing a little north to the Vasikkasaari lean-to shelter located north of Karhusaaressa for a snack break.
Remember that the rock paintings are protected and preserved by the Antiquities Act, so touching the paintings is forbidden.
The route starts at the Huutotöyry landing site, which is located on the left side of the boat dock. From the shore, you set off paddling north towards the Siltasaari bridge, under which the route goes to Piilahdenselkä. The Piilahdenselkä is paddled along the left shore towards Piilahdensalmi. In Piilahdensalmi, a boating route goes on both sides of Kavonsaari, so in the strait you must paddle very close to the left shore and be careful of boat traffic. After the strait, take a direction north of Seppälänniemi towards Tattarisaari visible in the north. At the northern end of Tattarisaari, the vertical cliff of Haukkavuori already comes into view, which when paddling closer begins to appear like an animal's head. You can visit the Haukkavuori rock painting at this point or first continue past Haukkasaari to the Rautakannanvuori rock painting and then return to Haukkavuori.
The Haukkavuori rock painting depicts a moose. It is above a crevice formed by a block detached from the rock on a flat rock protrusion. It is best visible when the viewer looks at the wall from the side with chest facing south. The painting is protected from rain under the rock overhang, so it has remained well-preserved and clear. On the vertical cliff of Rautakannanvuori there are faint color spots over a wide area but two spots where the patterns are clearer. One spot is approximately in the middle of the wall between two dark color streaks. The image depicts a moose and its head is visible but the rear part is badly eroded. In the other spot on the right edge of the wall, lower moose as well as a boat image can be seen on the left side of the dark rock streak and a soil terrace with birches. Below the boat image, two more faintly visible side-profile human figures can be distinguished. The rock paintings of Haukkavuori and Rautakannanvuori are about 5 meters above water level and visible from the water.
From Haukkavuori, the route continues south following the right shore towards Hernesaari. The Hernesaaret islands are passed on the right and then the route turns north where Riihimäki ends on the right. Continue along the right shore passing Kissalahti towards Karhusaaressa. At the narrowest point, when Karhusaari is on the left side, cross the boating route quickly and move to the shore of Karhusaari at the steep cliff marked on the map. The Karhusaari rock painting requires landing on a small shore ledge behind which the cliff is located sheltered by trees. The rock painting is on the cliff about chest height when standing on land, and two small animal figures can be distinguished from it.
From Karhusaari, you can continue along the shores northwards to the Vasikkasaari lean-to shelter located halfway along the route for a break. The lean-to is on the east shore of Vasikkasaari about halfway across the island. Vasikkasaari has a well-equipped campfire shelter and composting toilet. Vasikkasaari is also suitable for overnight stays if you want to split the trip into two days.
When paddling back towards Vuolenkoski, you can start south from Vasikkasaari and circle the west side of Karhusaari towards Kintturinkärki, then eastwards to Aittoniemi. After Aittoniemi, the route narrows into Kankaansalmi, where it is advisable to stay on the right shore because of the boating route. After Virtasaaris, you return to Piilahdensalmi, from where you can paddle the same route as when returning to the Huutotöyry landing site.
