The eastern part of the National Park of the 5 Terre has a spectacular and extremely steep slope, very difficult to access, along which several different hamlets, surrounded by vineyards are spread. It is a terraced slope which shows how people shaped the landscape to obtain arable soil in centuries of hard labour. This stretch of the coast, between Riomaggiore and Portovenere, is called Tramonti and includes the settlements of Fossola, Monesteroli and Schiara, in addition to a series of small groups of houses-cellars clinging to the coast. Among these, Monesteroli is particularly interesting as it can be reached by the monumental “Scala grande”, a long and vertiginous staircase made up of blocks of sandstone whose steps wind down the slope where the houses of the village stand.
