The harmonious coexistence of old and new architecture in the Bregenzerwald draws attention to itself. Exciting, the fact that the architectural style of today is based on traditional knowledge and skill, which is subject to constant development.

Old or new, a typical Bregenzerwald house is usually built out of wood. And why? Since wood grows in abundance in the region, and is a sustainable building material. It is a material made from solar energy which requires a small amount of energy to process, which is easy to dispose of and even to recycle if used correctly.

Wood has diverse uses, and at the same time is a disciplining material. You need profound knowledge of its laws in order to be able to work with it. Today's architects and craftsmen have acquired this skill. Then as now, they go to great lenghts to ensure that the wood is cut at the right sign, and to leave it to dry out slowly in order to then process it in accordance with its true nature.

Bregenzerwald houses are, traditionally, energy-saving houses. The old, traditional Bregenzerwald house is a compact "box" with gable roof, without a balcony, without oriel. The clear lines and the protective facade made from wooden shingles bestow the houses with their very own elegance.

The new houses pursue this idea - from the private house through to the hotel. They are plain, occasionally even bordering on the provocative, with an amazing wealth of spatial and functional qualities. The high demands made on the aesthetics go hand-in-hand with those made on energy efficiency and sustainability. Renewable sources of energy are increasingly used for heating purposes and the heating of hot water, in the form of solar cells, photovoltaic systems, geothermal heat and wood. The ecologically valuable and practical building materials as well as the conscious use of energy have a pleasant effect on the indoor climate, for example.

Typically old
The traditional Bregenzerwald house - usually a farmhouse - is a single house: the barn and, as a rule two-storey, living quarters are all under one roof. The wooden-shingle facade is characteristic. A special architectural feature is the "tuft", a sort of loggia in front of the entrance. Examples of especially attractive buildings can be seen in the following places: Au-Rehmen, Bizau, Nazes Hus (inn in Mellau), Schnepfau centre, Schoppernau centre and Schwarzenberg village square.

Typically new
Private houses and hotels alike built according to modern construction principles abound in all towns. Municipal buildings worth visiting are located in, for example, Andelsbuch (village hall), in Bizau (community building), in Hittisau (fire station and arts centre), in Lingenau (cheese cellar), in Schwarzenberg (conversion of the Angelika Kauffmann Hall and the Angelika Kauffmann Museum), in Schoppernau (arts centre with Franz Michael Felder Museum), and in Sulzberg (village hall).
