For the first time mentioned in 1333, the former St. Boniface Church is situated on the marketplace in Arnstadt. The church burned down to the outer walls during the great fire of 1581 and was reconstructed as the so-called "New Church" in 1676.

In 1703 the organ builder Johann Friedrich Wender was instructed to created a new organ for the church, which then was inspected and approved by the 18-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach then got his first job as an organist in Arnstadt and remained at the Bach-Church until 1707.
