The double-towered pilgrimage church is enthroned on a hill on the eastern edge of Graz. From 1714 it was probably built by the architects Andreas and Johann Georg Stengg on behalf of the Pauline Fathers' Order.

The heart of the church is a statue of the Virgin Mary, whose miracles, widely told, attracted many pilgrims as early as the 17th century.

Over 200 steps lead steeply up the Purberg to the most important Marian shrine in Graz - the pilgrimage church Mariatrost. A curved baroque façade and two mighty towers are mounted in the side wings of a monastery building in which - with interruptions - monks lived until 1996.

The skylight penetrates through a dome into the interior of the church and also illuminates the High Ages with the late Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary. Their clothing dates back to the Baroque period. Just like the altar itself. The grey marble was broken directly on Purberg. The side altars with impressive marble inlays were donated by Styrian noble families.

The interior is dominated by frescoes by Lukas von Schram and Johann Baptist Scheidt. In them Mary is glorified, also as "helper to victory". As a scene from the victorious battle of Lepanto against the Turks proves.

The pulpit is particularly impressive from the equipment. It was created in 1779 by Veit Königer. The highest figure on the sound cover symbolizes faith. Expressive figures raise their hands to him, to the cross, seeking help. At the basket of the pulpit the hope with the anchor and the love with the heart complete the three Christian virtues. In 1999 Pope John Paul II raised the Mariatrost pilgrimage church to the rank of a basilica.
